The industry operates at present 9 fishmeal plants and 6 canning plants along the South east and West Coast of South Africa. Approximately 70 purse seine vessels are in operation. It is difficult to give an exact replacement cost of the present infrastructure, but it is estimated to be in order of R1 200 million.
